Research advances in the regulating mechanism of oxidative stress in rheumatoid arthritis and intervention with traditional Chinese medicine

Abstract

Rheumatoid arthritis(RA) is a chronic,systemic autoimmune disease,with erosive arthritis as its main manifestation. The pathogenesis of the disease is unclear,but recent studies have found that the development of RA is related to oxidative stress. Therefore,oxidative stress may be one of its pathogenic mechanisms. Studies have shown that traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),as an antioxidative means of preventing and treating RA,has the following advantages:multi-level and multi-target action,a favorable safety profile,and fewer side effects. This article reviews the current status of prevention and treatment of RA with TCM based on the oxidative stress mechanism and summarizes and analyzes the factors and pathways related to its main mechanisms of action. It aims to provide a theoretical basis for clinical research and shed light on the directions for basic research.
