Objectives The situation of developing and promoting feed with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula in Shaanxi Province was comprehensively studied to promote the widespread application of feed with TCM formula and enhance the comprehensive implementation of " prohibition of antibiotics in feed, reduction of antibiotics in farming, and antibiotic-free livestock products". Methods A combination of point and surface research methods including questionnaire surveys and in-depth investigations of enterprise was used to conduct an in-depth analysis of the current status of developing and promoting feed with TCM formula in the feed industry in Shaanxi Province. Results The development and promotion of feed with TCM formula in Shaanxi Province has achieved phased results, but there are problems including mismatched policies and regulations, unstable quality of TCM, complex processes of production, and low degree of recognition from farmers. Conclusions The ideas of developing and promoting feed with TCM formula including strengthening the drive of scientific and technological innovation, conducting collaborative researches on technology, and enhancing guidance on technical specification and the path of developing and promoting feed with TCM formula including precisely designing the projects of development, establishing a collaborative alliance of studying technology, building a database of nutritional parameters for raw material, and implementing standardized production are proposed.
